Dissociative Identity Disorder - Plush Stuffed Animal

Dissociative Identity Disorder develops in early childhood, almost always in response to repeated trauma. When a child's sense of self never fully consolidates, it can settle instead into multiple distinct identity states, usually called alters. Together they make up a system.

Alters can differ in name, age, gender, mannerisms, and memory. One may hold memories another cannot reach, and control of the body shifts between them, which systems call switching. Amnesia is part of the diagnosis, but it rarely looks the way film and television suggest. Most DID is covert. Many people live with it for years, unrecognized by others and sometimes by themselves, before anyone names it.

DID sits alongside related diagnoses such as OSDD and Partial DID, which describe similar experiences with different features. The older term Multiple Personality Disorder was retired in 1994.

The mismatched limbs represent different alters within a single system. The symbol on the chest represents OSDD rather than DID, which was our attempt (perhaps misguided) to represent the spectrum of experience.

This design is being retired and a dedicated OSDD bun is in development.
